FC Morpeth Porto 2 Morpeth Town Juniors 1
(see gallery section for pictures)
Morpeth Town finished their season with a flat performance against local rivals FC Morpeth. Having played just once in the last five weeks, the team looked off the pace, played way below their normal standard and FC ran out deserving winners on the day.
Morpeth played the first half playing up the slope at Newminster and after a bright start, the game settled into a scrappy affair. In fact, whilst effort was being shown by both teams, the first half was devoid of a clear chance and neither goalkeeper was tested.
Town had fleeting opportunities in the FC box as they looked to utilise the pace of Hughes, but the FC defence was holding strong. Likewise at the other end, Taylor was not called into action, although Foster did well to snuff out a chance when the ball broke to an FC player 8 yards out.
Town made changes at half time to ensure all players got at least 30 minutes action and the game opened up a little. FC wasted a glorious opportunity very early in the half when the left winger poked the ball wide with Taylor static in the Morpeth goal.
With the game becoming stretched, chances were bound to come, but Town were struggling to put any passes together and their play was disjointed. And FC capitalised on this general malaise by taking the lead.
It was a poor goal to concede. A harmless looking ball was lifted into the Town box and as Thompson hesitated, an FC striker nipped in a floated a ball beyond the outstretched arms of Taylor.
Whilst Thompson will have been disappointed with that play, he was key for Morpeth striking back quickly. FC cleared their lines and whilst the FC striker waited, Thompson forced himself in and surged forward. With momentum, he crossed into the box and as feet were swung in the general direction of the ball, it found its way through to Whittle at the far post who squeezed a shot under the keeper's body.
Town were briefly in the ascendancy and Moore came close when he struck the outside of a post, the ball rebounding to Rolt who could not force it home. Moore looked the most likely outlet for Town and an untimely bobble forced a miscued cross when four players were lining up to convert.
But it was FC who grabbed the winner. A through ball beat the otherwise excellent Smith and the FC striker outpaced Wilson and lifted the ball over Taylor for a fine finish.
That seemed to deflate Town and they rarely threatened a second equaliser. Hughes was denied a clear run on goal by a superb last ditch tackle by an FC central defender whilst they almost got lucky from a free kick when the ball reared horribly off the pitch, but the FC keeper kept his eye on the ball to claim.
So, a disappointing way to end a very successful season; moreso given it was a first ever defeat against their local rivals. However, only Rolt and Smith approached their usual level of performance on the day and against opponents who finished 3rd in the league, that was never going to suffice.
TEAM : Taylor, Foster, Tomlin, Wilson, Smith, Haxell, Moore, Barwick, Rolt, Hughes, Aldridge. SUBS : Thompson, Bryson, Brown, Whittle

Player Stats and Reviews
The under 11 team used 17 players over the season. Here are the stats for the players.
JACK TAYLOR (26 games, 3 goals, 5 man of the matches). Very good goalkeeper who, despite being under-utilised in some matches, has shown increasing ability. Has an appreciation of the more difficult aspects of goalkeeping such as communication and coming off his line. Has played out of goals and netted.
THOMAS ALDRIDGE (17 games + 3 sub, 1 goal, 3 man of the macthes). Has contributed well in his first full season with the club. Arguably, has the best technical ability in the team with neat footwork and an intelligent appreciation of the game, he provides balance to the midfield.
STEVEN WHITTLE (19 games + 6 sub, 3 goals, 0 man of the macthes). Steven has had an excellent first season with the club proving to be a reliable full back. Does the simple things very well and shown promise in more advanced roles where he netted 3 times.
JACK SMITH (21 games + 1 sub, 1 goal, 1 man of the match). Moved from midfield to a central defensive position where his ability to read a game has seen him develop significantly. Proven to be a good foil with defensive partner Wilson, and what he lacks in height is compensated by his good anticipation and positional play.
CAMERON WILSON (25 games, 5 goals, 3 man of the matches). Strong, dominant centre back who has improved both concentration and performance as the season has progressed. Tough tackler, he enjoyed the odd game up front and was one of 6 players who grabbed a hat-trick this season.
PIERCE BARWICK (24 games + 1 sub, 10 goals, 1 man of the match). Elusive central midfield player who has ability to get forward and score goals. Clever feet and an appreciation of other players, his tackling has improved too as the season progressed.
LEWIS THOMPSON (14 games + 9 subs, 1 goal, 0 man of the matches). Tough tackling and committed full back who has improved during the season. Has also played in midfield where his harrassing has disrupted opponents, his game can develop further with confidence.
STUART MOORE (27 games, 20 goals, 7 man of the matches). Captain and only ever present, with his strong running and direct play he has been the source of many goals for the team. Has excellent ability from crosses and set pieces, whilst his strong shooting has played a part in an impressive 20 goal haul.
TOM ROLT (24 games + 2 subs, 11 goals, 0 man of the matches). The focus of the attack, Tom has the ability to hold the ball up and bring others into play. Has also played in midfield which offers more opportunies for long range shots where he can strike a mean volley!
MARK BRYSON (10 games + 16 subs, 3 goals, 0 man of the matches). Utility player who was involved in all but 1 game this season. Adds balance being naturally left footed, he can knock some lovely balls forward and has chipped in with 3 strikes. Keeps things simple.
CALUM HUGHES (25 games + 1 sub, 36 goals, 4 man of the matches). A revelation this season where he has developed into striker of some promise. Has pace and a natural instinct for being in the right place at the right time, many of his goals being in the 6 yard box. Scored 7 goals in a single game against Kingston Park.
JONATHAN WINFIELD (1 game + 13 subs, 1 goal, 0 man of the matches). Never has a goal being so warmly appreciated as 'Jonaldinho's' strike against Bedlington Terriers! Has enjoyed opportunities to play competetive games, he responded with enthusiasm and has contributed some key touches in the teams attacking play.
ALEX BROWN (11 games + 9 sub, 11 goals, 3 man of the matches). When opportunities have presented themselves, he has shown himself to be a natural finisher. Also has a fine appreciation of play and is a good passer, linking play well. Another one of the hat-trick players.
DANIEL HAXELL (22 games + 1 sub, 5 goals, 0 man of the matches). A hugely impressive first season for the club, he has proven to be a great all round performer for the club. Tough tackler and strong, he has often driven the team from central midfield and contributed 5 goals too.
JAKE TOMLIN (14 games + 6 subs, 1 goal, 0 man of the matches). A versatile player, Jake is comfortable anywhere across the back four whilst also shown ability in a defensive midfield player. A dogged defender, has deceptive pace which makes it difficult for opponents, his play has improved as he has gained in confidence.
LEE DICKINSON (10 games + 6 subs, 1 goal, 0 man of the matches). A neat and tidy full back who joined the club a few weeks into the season. Shows a good appreciation of the role and his positional play has improved markedly. A decent tackler, he enjoyed a game up front where he took his goal with aplomb.
ROBERT FOSTER (8 games + 6 subs, 0 goals, 0 man of the matches). Joined the club mid-season and whilst making the odd appearance in goal, has proved himself as a decent full back. Keeps things simple, but is a good tackler and has enjoyed the opportunity of playing in a different position.
